Web-based Collaborative Learning in School Mathematics

It is now believed that mathematical knowledge is created through collaborative learning,
rather than something individual. This is based on social constructivism in recent years.
And teachers have come to accept their new position of an advisor to the students as shown
by Vygotsky's "Zone of proximal development".
Through using a distributed network such as the Internet, its very features are effectively
utilized and allows the externalization of the student's knowledge. These knowledge can then
be shared and this learning method is in accordance with the present idea of how learning occurs.
Thus, we have researched on web-based collaborative learning on school mathematics from 1998
focusing on this point.

○An Experimental Collaboration

We developed a environment of experimental collaborative learning with support of Koshikawa
laboratory, Faculty of Education, Chiba University.   If you need a password to go to
the page of collaborative learning, please send a mail to Nagai.

○Collaborative learning with Junior High School Students in Kobe City

We have been beginning a collaboration with Sumiyoshi Junior High School. Students at Two schools
think and discuss the questions and the points not to understand in mathematics
learning.   If you need a password to go to the page of collaborative learning, please send
a mail to Nagai.

○Chiba University-Department of Education affiliated Junior High school
will be newly applied to our project in 2000.

Although mathematics collaborative learning has been advanced until now by two schools,
Nagaura junior high school, Sumiyoshi junior high school and Chiba University
affiliated junior high school will participate in collaborative learning newly with guidance of
Mr. Junichiro Nagata in 2000. Please wait and see.
